Microscopy School Lesson 12 - An Introduction to Photostimulation

Photostimulation is a general term for a range of techniques in which a specimen is stimulated with optical radiation. When coupled to a microscope the wavelength range is typically between the near UV and near IR. Precise spectral, temporal and spatial control of optical radiation is key to manipulating microscopic specimens in order to characterise their properties and behaviour.

In this lecture we will explore the scientific and technical developments which have fuelled the current revolution in optical stimulation and observation with fluorescence microscopy. Dr Browne will use examples to illustrate techniques ranging from micro-surgery and molecular diffusion to optogenetics control of cells and organisms. This lecture will deal with high level concepts and basic technologies.
