Belfast firm flies the flag for Engineering and Manufacturing excellence
Belfast, 16 May, 2012
Andor Technology plc (Andor), a world leader in scientific imaging and spectroscopy solutions, is celebrating a double success – being finalists for the prestigious MacRobert Award and being included in the Make It In Great Britain Exhibition in London. Not only does this reinforce Andor’s position as a global market leader, it also puts Belfast firmly on the map for the superior quality of engineering and manufacturing it produces.
Andor is only one of three finalists in the MacRoberts Award, the UK’s longest running and most esteemed engineering prize. The award celebrates outstanding innovation and commercial success, attributes ably demonstrated by this year’s finalists: Andor, JBA Consulting and Jaguar Land Rover. Andor has been shortlisted for the Neo sCMOS camera, a scientific digital camera that has delivered a step change in scientific imaging. Neo allows researchers to capture high resolution pictures of single cells and molecular structures with greater accuracy, less background noise and at a faster frame rate than ever before.
The 2012 finalists were selected from a long list of over 40 nominations, drawn from every field of contemporary engineering. The winner will be announced on 26 June at the Academy’s Awards Dinner and will receive a gold medal plus £50,000 cash prize. Previous recipients include Microsoft Research, Cambridge, for its Xbox Kinect human motion capture system and Arup’s National Aquatic Centre, better known as the ‘Water Cube’ – the dramatic centre piece of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
John Robinson FREng, Chair of the MacRobert Award judging panel, says: “We have been bombarded with bad news about the economy in the last few years, so it is all the more encouraging to see three such innovative and successful companies doing so well in very different sectors. There is great engineering like this going on all over the UK and we are delighted to have three of the best examples shortlisted for the MacRobert Award this year.”
As well as the MacRobert success, Andor is also one of the only Northern Irish companies included in the Make It In Great Britain exhibition, which showcases the very best of manufacturing in the UK. Andor beat competition from hundreds of UK companies to join 40 others at the exhibition, which will take place at the Science Museum, London, during the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.
Business Manager Mark Prisk said: “Manufacturing accounts for 8 per cent of total UK employment and well over half of export goods, yet current perceptions of the industry are out of date and do not reflect that reality. We have selected a really exciting mix of exhibits…I hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition and see all of the great examples of British design and manufacturing. It will be spectacular.”
Andor’s inclusion in both events confirms its position as one of the most innovative companies in the UK and demonstrates why it is a market leader in their field.
