A Pen-Ray Lamp is a low pressure cold cathode Mercury or Rare Gas Lamp (Argon, Krypton, Neon or Xenon gas) used for wavelength calibration of a spectrograph. It uses a double-bore quartz tube to allow the electrode placement to be at one end of the lamp to provide insertion into restricted areas. Depending on the lamp characteristics (primarily the lighted length) the power requirements to the lamp can range from 2-30w and the lamp can produce from 40 microwatts/cm2 to over 20 μW/cm2 at a range of 1" (2.5cm) from the target.
