When Dr Colin Coates, Andor’s market development manager for imaging, proposed ‘Luca’ as the name of our newest EMCCD imaging camera range, he accompanied it with some inspired (well, he thinks so) scientific justification…“Luca” he stated dramatically, “means ‘Bringer of Light’ – an entirely appropriate name I’m sure you’ll agree, as with this camera we will be bringing very faint light to the eyes of many researchers.” “Also” he enthused irrepressibly, “LUCA is the recognized acronym for ‘Last Universal Common Ancestor’, the first primordial cell from which all life has evolved. Surely a great link to the obvious cell biology usage of this camera.”However, we suspected Colin may well have had an ulterior motive, as a few days prior to this suggestion, he became a proud father to a bouncing baby boy...named...Luca.
N.B. - Colin wishes to make it absolutely clear that he did NOT name his son after an EMCCD camera!
