μManager and Image J

μManager is an Open Source software package for imaging and control of automated microscopes on multiple platforms (including Windows and Linux). Together with ImageJ, a popular image processing package, μManager provides a comprehensive imaging solution – comparable to commercially available software suites. μManager essentially functions as a plug-in for ImageJ, offering a complete software solution for both hardware control and data analysis in one.

μManager has been envisioned as an open-source Java-based alternative to other leading imaging software suites. Its Java environment provides software extensibility and offers ways of customising the workbench with various scriptable macros. In addition to these it is possible to devise user’s own plug-ins and compile them within μManager. Hundreds of applications can be created in this way and then executed on many different platforms such as Java virtual machine, as applet or as a stand-alone programme. Through full integration with ImageJ environment, μManager is able to access vast resources of this system. This includes implementing advanced and novel imaging procedures, extending functionality, customization and rapid development of specialized imaging applications. All legacy functionality of ImageJ is thus further extended with μManager’s link to hardware device controls. Thanks to its vast software flexibility, μManager can incorporate various custom-built devices to work seamlessly as part of an integrated acquisition and analysis system. Having full access to the source code of μManager means that the users have complete control over their system and can easily customise and shape their software and hardware environments. It is also possible to couple μManager to MatLab and other image analysis system for both data processing as well as hardware control.

Drivers cover the whole Andor EMCCD range…

Among the many hardware devices controlled by μManager, are the Andor iXonEM+ and LucaEM EMCCD cameras and the Clara Interline CCD. With the back-illuminated EMCCD camera and “virtual phase” iXonEM+ family, Andor have delivered a dedicated, truly high-end, ultrasensitive scientific camera platform, designed specifically to get the absolute best from EMCCD technology across all critical performance specs and parameters. Andor's LucaEM EMCCD Cameras family represents a highly cost-effective yet powerful and flexible USB 2.0 camera solution, making EMCCD available to every laboratory.

The entire range of Andor EMCCD models is now fully compatible with μManager. This means that your imaging setup can be optimized for ultra-sensitive and fast performance within this downloadable, open source software environment.

N.B. To operate Andir cameras within μManager, the Andor Software Development Kit (SDK) must be installed.
Detailed instructions for operating Andor cameras in μManager can be found on NeutronOptics.com

Benefit from iCam-optimized performance

Andor iXonEM+, LucaEM or Clara cameras operating within μManager, offer an optimized experimental environment in which you can push the speed of multi-channel acquisition through Andor’s iCam technology. iCam is a combined firmware and software innovation, a highly efficient and performance-optimized solution which is integrated across Andor EMCCD imaging cameras and various software platforms including μManager. iCam offers next generation EMCCD performance during your tightly synchronized and complex multidimensional microscopy experiments. Using state-of-the-art bi-directional communication between camera and PC, iCam really kicks in for multi-channel acquisitions (especially when different exposure times are used), rapidly toggling between channels, whether software triggered or hardware (externally) triggered, with absolute minimal overheads.
